The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is warning taxpayers about a flood of fraudulent calls and email phishing attempts related to the coronavirus and stimulus checks. If scammers are successful in their attempts, you could be the victim of tax-related fraud and possibly identity theft. According to the IRS Criminal Investigation Chief, Don Fort, "While you are waiting to hear about your economic impact payment, criminals are working hard to trick you into getting their hands on it. The IRS Criminal Investigation Division is working hard to find these scammers and shut them down, but in the meantime, we ask people to remain vigilant." In addition to calls and emails, scammers may try text messages, websites and social media attempts in an effort to steal money or personal information. Read this IRS news release to learn more about the scams, so you can stay safe.
