Many banks do not have stock ownership and board member succession plans. Traditionally, the transfer of bank stock across generations had little effect on community banks. Successors remained in the community, and some even became board members. Today, most directors’ children move away, build lives elsewhere and are not interested in retaining their stock or serving on the board of directors.

We are proud that very few of our stock shares change hands in any given year. Our company is owned by 252 individuals who are clients, board members, associates and vital parts of our communities. When stock does become available, it is usually sold within 24 hours.

In addition, our directors implemented a board succession plan in 2012 when the average age of a First Bank director was 67. An outcome of the plan was an advisory board to serve as a training ground for future directors. This advisory board was a success because it familiarized future directors with regulatory requirements, and it allowed us to observe and evaluate potential directors. Today, the average age of our board of directors is 52.
